Ithmid Eyeliner
Kohl/antimony ( ) is a very important sunnah of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, and removing it from one’s face is a major sin unless you have a valid reason for doing so. It is also considered amongst the symbols of Islam itself and leaving it is a clear indication that one does not take the religion seriously enough.
Kohl is made by immersing the metallic-stone ithmid in zamzam water, soaking it for a few days then grinding it into a fine powder. This process softens it and helps remove any impurities. It is then rubbed lightly on the eyelids by dragging the end of the kohl stick in the waterline and above & below the eyes. It also helps reduce eye fatigue, stinging, itching and glare.
Ithmid is different to other types of eyeliners/kohl in that it carries healing qualities and promotes universal beauty traits. This is why it can be used by both men and women. Most other types of kohl carry only a superficial and short term beauty effect. They do not carry any structural changes that make them permanent like Ithmid kohl does.
Ibn Abbaas Radiyallahu ‘Anhu reports that Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam said: “Verily the best of all the kohl is the one which is made from ithmid. It brightens the eyes and strengthens the growth of the eye lashes.” It is able to treat some of the common eye diseases such as redness, conjunctivitis and internal bleeding. It can also help relieve eyestrain, relax the eye muscles, and eases congestion of the tear ducts. It can even help with nonhereditary baldness by stimulating the hair follicles to grow thicker and longer. Ithmid
